History

Its All Began With One Man's Vision And Determination

The Hin Leong Group's Founder, Mr. Lim Oon Kuin, popularly known as "O.K. Lim", came to Singapore from a small town, Putian in Fujian province, China.

From owning a small fishing boat, the Lim family's sharp business acumen propelled them to expand into supplying diesel to fishing vessels. It was this remarkable foresight that started HIN LEONG TRADING (PTE.) LTD. ("Hin Leong" means "Prosperity" in Chinese) in 1963.

In 1968, the Group acquired its first vessel, 100 DWT "Sea Lion". In the 1970s Group regionalized its bunkering and shipping businesses. Vessels were steadily acquired to support regional bunkering activities, for charter to oil majors and for shipping petroleum products between China and Singapore.

By the end of 1980s, the Group was widely recognized as one of the major oil traders in the international petroleum trading arena, besides the oil majors, to be awarded the Global Traders Program (formerly known as Approved Oil Trader) status by IE Singapore (formerly the Trade Development Board of Singapore).

Five decades later, Hin Leong has grown from a one-man-one-truck oil dealer to become one of the largest locally-owned independent oil trading companies. The Group's bunkering arm, Ocean Bunkering Services (Pte.) Ltd. is well recognized as one of the top bunker fuel suppliers in Singapore. Ocean Tankers (Pte.) Ltd. owns and operates more than 130 vessels ranging from coastal barges to 318,000 DWT VLCCs, ranked #16 among worldwide tanker operators.
